Match report
And so the season begins.....
A bright sunny afternoon, a picturesque setting, an immaculate outfield, a top quality strip, a sparkling century from the home captain and any of three results possible going into the final over. What more can you ask for?
This year's captain won the toss and elected to bat on what looked and proved to be a very good wicket.
Cheeseman Jnr and Cheeseman Snr opened the proceedings. Jnr was positive and looking to push the score along, Snr more curmudgeonly and cautious, in many ways it was like watching any episode of the classic comedy Steptoe and Son.
The first wicket fell 7 overs in with 30 runs on the board when 2nd slip pouched a very tidy catch of the edge off Snr's bat.
Paul Humphrey was next in and in a bright and breezy partnership put on 76 in 12 overs before Paul holed out to a googly bowling leg spinner just before drinks. It should be noted that the 1st and 2nd slip area was proving to be a profitable area of scoring, despite the presence of fielders.
Anum Hamdani, making his Saturday debut came and was soon off the mark with a couple of tidy boundaries.
Drinks came at 20 overs with Gadd sitting with a respectable 114-2.
After drinks Anum was bowled, bringing another debutant, Nick Cottrell, to the crease. With a very positive attitude Nick moved to 6 and after 23 overs we were 139 for 3 and whispers in the plush surroundings of the recently refurbed pavillion were of a 250 plus score.
The very next over the googly bowling leg spinner morphed into a MOAB, (mother of all bowlers) taking five wickets in 7 balls with turbocharged, laser accurate yorkers. Seems that he normally bowls these in Div 1A on a Saturday. 139 for 3 became 139 for 7 and the pavilion chatter turned to "would we be in the pub straight after tea?"
After some words between captains the terminally quick bowler was replaced with the more gentle spin of one of Bamville's two 13 year olds. A relieved Tom Graham was soon off the mark with a four but holed out to the wily 13 year old's cunning guile. 157-8 with 11 overs left. George and John took it carefully until the 35th over where the plan was to open our shoulders and go for it. The 35th over came and went, a maiden.
John scampered a 2 to complete a well deserved century. With less than 3 overs to go John holed out to mid on for a fantastic 109 runs.
Jordan was cleaned up on the penultimate ball by the 13 year old off spinner and we closed at a very respectable 203 all out.
Many thanks to Archie Birdseye for keeping score immaculately
Time for tea.
Paul Humphreys and Nick opened the bowling. The Bamville openers had contrasting styles, one deciding cow corner was the place to score, the other along the ground through the slips.
Paul was replaced by Alex Harris and Nick by Dave Hearn, both of whom bowled exceptionally well with Alex taking 2 for 6 in his first four overs as a Gadd player.
Confusion reigned as to when drinks should actually be and what the score was but the scorebook suggests about 84-3, the forensic accounting analysis post match that this may have actually been 84-2.
So the game was evenly poised.
Dave and Alex continued after tea. Alex was replaced by Saair who took two wickets in his first over. Tom replaced Dave and removed the obdurate Bamville opener, Paul Humphreys snaffling the catch at slip.
This brought together the two thirteen year-olds with the score at somewhere about 127 for 6.
These two batted very well, putting on over 50 together before one of them danced down the wicket to Jordan, missed the ball and continued dancing back to the pavilion having been summarily stumped.
This brought in MOAB who could also bat. He skillfully managed the strike to enable the youngster to play most of the shots win the game with four balls left.
Great game to watch except that we bowled our 39.2 overs very slowly, something to watch out for in league games. It would also help to have a scorer for both innings to avoid the confusion in our bowling spell. It took an afternoon of match reconstruction to get accurate bowling figures.
