Great Gaddesden Cricket Club Sunday XI v Headstone St George on Sun 21 May 2017 at 2 pm
Great Gaddesden Cricket Club Won : Headstone 123 ao off 38 overs, Gadd 127 for 5 off 27 overs
Match report
Although it was a pleasant afternoon the deluge from the previous few days meant the drying outfield and wicket were unlikely to yield a runfest as seen in earlier games this season.
Headstone won the toss and decided, somewhat surprisingly to some, to bat first.
Paul Humphreys and Steve Brosnan opened the bowling and kept things very tight with Brossie bowling the normally prolific the left handed opener round his legs with a peach of an inswinger.
A double change meant Luke and Amin continuing to apply the pressure. Jake replaced Luke after 3 overs and together with Amin bowled a very tight line and length to restrict Headstone to less than 3 runs an over.
Paul Humphreys dropped a dolly
At the end of their spell, the skipper, John Moore and Jordan polished off the last six wickets, including an excellent pick up and direct hit for a run out by Jordan. Overall it was a very tight and energetic performance in the field.
Tea was served and what a splendid tea it was, the skipper helping himself to six portions of strawberries and cream.
With everyone stuffed to the brim we started our batting response. The opening quick made short work of Usman and Tim bringing John Moore and George to the crease to steady the ship. First ball George leaves one outside the off stump to see it fly through for four byes, second ball is a beamer, third ball is again outside off stump, George leaves again, this time the off stump and bails are on their way to the boundary. 5 for 3 and we are in trouble.
Paul Humphreys and John Moore took control of the situation and batted sensibly as the score mounted. failing to grasp the urgency of the situation they completed a lazy all run four (which should have been an easy five) and soon after they huffed and puffed a three.
With the pitch flattening out batting became easier and at drinks we were just thirty odd short of a win.
Paul mistimed a hook and went first ball after a glass of orange squash bringing a strawberry laden skipper to the wicket. With some chirping from the three hatted Headstone fielder, he began rather nervously but pushed the score along. John Moore was out LBW to a ball that almost got ankle height, leaving Luke Hill and the skipper to bring the boys home.
Enjoyable game, good overall team performance, bring on the next one.
