Great Gaddesden Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v The Old Eastcotians on Sat 29 Apr 2017 at 1.30pm
Great Gaddesden Cricket Club Lost : Gadd 142 for 9 off 40 overs, Old Eastcotians 143 for 7 off 24.5 overs
Match report
Captain John Cheeseman Junior won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a good wicket. The Old Eastcotian new ball attack was able to find some variable bounce and removed Phil Warren - lbw without scoring - in the third over. Of the top six only John himself showed the necessary application to deal with the bowling and wicket which, although not as batting friendly as previous weeks, was by no means difficult. Having reached the 20 run mark the Gadd then proceeded to gallop through their next 4 wickets in 5 overs adding just 8 more runs. Progress after this was understandably steady with John and debutant Dave Maskell adding 40 runs before Dave offered a catch behind. Other than the skipper (86*) only Archie Birdseye with an unbeaten 10 reached double figures and their stand of 38 to finish the innings took Gadd to 142 for 8. An under par total but at least something to defend.
The second innings got off to a flyer for Old Eastcotians with 33 runs plundered from the first two overs. Scott Dormady in his first spell since the end of the season started erratically but then took the first wicket as Phil Warren took the catch at backward point. Scott's partner at the other end Alex Harris bowled in the right area but was the victim of a batting line up determined to score runs quickly and hit anything they could. The leg spin of Stuart Upton accounted for the other opener - a smart catch at slip taken by Dorm - and we were starting to get into the middle order. Most of the batsmen seemed to want to score runs quickly and whilst the disciplined line bowled by Mark Birdseye - who finished with figures of 3-something - restricted this somewhat, not enough of the shots hit were going to fielders. Both Nick Cottrell and Carl Smith made good catches in the outfield to show what could happen when they did. Smudger's introduction into the attack was surely too late but he took a wicket with his first ball and the visitors must have been feeling the nerves.
They nevertheless finished the job off to win by 3 wickets in 20ish? overs to leave us wondering how many more runs in the first innings would have made the difference to either the approach of the opposition batsmen or the result.
