Great Gaddesden Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v London Colney 2 on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 1 pm
Great Gaddesden Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
The Gadd, fielding first kept a reasonable control over the London Colney batsmen throughout the first innings with Paul Humphreys bowling particularly well - 6 maidens in his 9 over spell. None of the visiting team made it to 20 runs as they were restricted to 127-9 in a rain shortened 42 over innings. The skipper's inventive bowling changes towards the end of the innings proved very effective although the catching efforts were (as usual) somewhat frustrating.
In contrast, the Colney catching at the start of the second innings was excellent and was responsible for the first 5 Gaddesden wickets, the catch to dismiss Phil Warren the highlight - unless your name is Phil Warren of course. With Usman Bukhari seemingly ignoring the team's plight as he attempted a reverse swipe at a ball on middle stump and opener John Moore being cruelly adjudged lbw soon after, Gadd were floundering on 28-7.
Andrew Teesdale, batting at 9, walked out to the middle to join captain John Cheeseman Jnr and the pair defied the odds, the conditions and the Colney attack to put on a game-winning century partnership. With boundaries in short supply, the alert running between the wickets was crucial in turning the tide of the match in Gaddesden's favour. Cheeseman's 38 not out was an exercise in control and nullifying the threat of the bowling and whilst Teesdale's innings was not without its moments of luck, he showed uncharacteristic discipline to reach a half century despite having hit only three fours. His fourth boundary was enough to complete the Gaddesden victory to the relief of the rest of the team in the pavilion and the disbelief of the unfortunate Colney fielders.
